Description:
This project, implemented by Humanitarian Assistance Muska (HAM) in Kunduz, Afghanistan, aimed to empower vulnerable community members—especially women—through training in sugarplum-making, literacy, and health education. The project provided both theoretical and hands-on training for producing sugarplums as a small business venture. Additionally, participants received literacy classes and health education focused on hygiene and basic disease prevention, creating a foundation for self-sufficiency and improved well-being.
Achievements:
Vocational Training: A total of 30 individuals (5 men and 25 women) completed training in sugarplum making, gaining proficiency in every step from ingredient preparation to packaging. Literacy and Health Education: Participants learned to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic. Health education covered topics like hygiene, safe water practices, and disease prevention, including vaccinations. Capacity Building: At project completion, trainees were provided with sugarplum-making equipment to continue production independently. This setup enabled each of the three groups to start small businesses, fulfilling the goal of creating a sustainable source of income.
Impact:
The project had a notable impact on community livelihoods and health awareness. Graduates gained valuable skills and independence through vocational training and literacy, fostering a sense of empowerment, especially among women. By establishing hygienic practices and basic healthcare knowledge, the project helped improve public health in the community. The sugarplum products also received attention at local events and media outlets, raising project visibility and encouraging community buy-in for ongoing support of similar educational initiatives.
